Far away in hyperspace on the planet Skaro, the ugly, blue humanoid Daleks are at war with the Thals. Leading the war is Zolfian and Chief Scientist Yarvelling, who plan to launch an atomic strike against the Thals and then wipe out any survivors with armed robots. However, when a freak meteor storm strikes their store of atomic weapons, things look bleak for all life on Skaro...

Part One

The humanoid Daleks discover pure cobalt in the Radiation Range and use it to manufacture a mighty neutron bomb with which, despite the protestations of pacifist ruler Drenz, who is murdered by Zolfian, they plan to destroy the Thals. Chief scientist Yarvelling has devised war machines, which will wipe out any Thal survivors. However, a meteorite storm detonates the bomb store.

Part Two

Yarvelling and Zolfian survive in a bunker or two years. When they emerge, and despite the neutron radiation sickness that is slowly killing them, they set off across the decimated landscape intent on reaching the capital city in Dalazar. There they are confronted by one of Yarvelling’s war machines.

Part Three

The war machine explains that the Daleks mutated in the radioactive blast, and only survived by shielding themselves inside the robotic casings. It commands them to build more casings before they die. This they do, just as the Emperor Dalek takes command.

• This story was originally published in issues 1-3 of TV Century 21.
• This story contradicts both the first televised Dalek story (where the war was between the Dals and the Thals, and started by the latter) and Genesis of the Daleks (where the Daleks were the result of deliberate experimentation by Davros).
• In the Big Finish audio play I, Davros, Davros’ sister is called Yarvell, a nod to Yarvelling, the other creator of the Daleks.
• The opening panel of the strip identifies the story as taking place ‘many thousands of years ago’.
• The Emperor of the Daleks is introduced in the final part of the strip.
