The Daleks explore Skaro intent on learning its secrets. In the North, near the pole, a Dalek ship fires at a mountain to analyse its construction. However, the blast activates long-dormant machines deep inside the mountain, which begin to thaw three human Daleks from suspended animation.

The Dalek ship develops a problem and is forced to land awaiting assistance. Meanwhile, the three humanoid Daleks – Lodian, Zet and Yvric – are revived, and fearful that their descendants will destroy them.
The humanoid Daleks witness the Daleks destroy the damaged ship and its occupant, who they were unable to save. Lodian realises that the Daleks are without conscience and must be stopped.
Yvric tries to contact the Daleks and offer them all the secrets of their ancestors. The Daleks respond by destroying him. Lodian is afraid, as he knows the location of a planet that the Daleks would love to know of – a planet named Earth.
Lodian takes Zet down into a secret laboratory. Meanwhile, the Emperor has realised that the creature they destroyed was one of their ancestors and orders any others to be captured alive.
Lodian reveals the location of Earth to Zet, but Zet knocks him unconscious and betrays him to the Daleks.
As they are taken to the Dalek ship, Lodian escapes. Zet and the Daleks give chase, but when they lose him, Zet begins to realise just how ruthless the Daleks really are.
The pursuit of Lodian continues. However, a Dalek gun causes an avalanche that buries them all.
Lodian takes advantage of the avalanche and the buried Daleks to return to the base. However, Zet follows him and discovers that Lodian has built a rocket with which he plans to travel to Earth. Once there, he will alert the earthmen to the danger of the Daleks.
Zet tries to stop Lodian with a ray gun, but Lodian makes it inside his ship. However, with the Daleks closing outside he realises he cannot risk leaving Zet with them as he might reveal Earth’s location. He elects instead to activate the self-destruct, which blows him, Zet and the advancing Daleks into atoms.
