For this crucial encounter the Daleks pose a doubly sinister threat, for the Hand of Omega is sought by two opposed Dalek factions – the Renegade Daleks and the Imperial Daleks.

A scrapyard on Trotters Lane and Coal Hill School – both in London, 1963 – where Doctor Who all began over forty years ago. Two rival Dalek factions are searching for the Hand of Omega, a powerful Time Lord device capable of manipulating entire planets – which was hidden on Earth by the Doctor during his visit to Earth in his first incarnation, with his graddaughter, Susan.

The seventh Doctor and Ace find themselves in the middle of a civil war between two Dalek factions, each seeking the Hand of Omega, while the miltary, led by Captain Gilmore, try to fight the alien menace.

One of the Dalek factions, the Imperial Daleks, seizes the Hand of Omega and returns to the Dalek mothership with it – delivering it to the Dalek emperor, who is none other than Davros.

However, the Doctor has booby-trapped the Hand of Omega, and once it is activated by Davros, it transports itself to the vicinity of the Dalek homeworld – and destroys Skaro’s sun by turning it into a supernova. The Dalek mothership is also destroyed by feedback from the explosion but Davros manages to escape, while the Hand of Omega returns itself to Gallifrey.

All in all, not a bad episode, despite the dreadfully wobbly Daleks and the scene where the Doctor manages to ‘talk a Dalek to death’ – by telling it that it is the last of its kind. The episode introduced the ‘Special Weapons Dalek’ – used to blown down the gates to Foreman’s Yard (despite normal Dalek blasters being easily up to the task). By this time Sylvester McCoy was comfortably in the role of the Doctor, and he puts in an excellent performance as a scheming manipulator, one step ahead of the Daleks.
