Daleks trek to Cardiff to raise money

02 August 2007

A group of Daleks is trekking from Wiltshire to Cardiff to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Those good fellows at the South West Dalek Crew are undertaking a 106-mile journey (called ‘the great Dalek trundle’) – inside their own fan-built Daleks. They left Swindon on Monday and are aiming to arrive in Cardiff around the end of the week.

Along the way, they will be stopping to squirt passers-by with water and raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. The aim is to raise £5,000.

The Daleks were built by the South West Dalek Crew (Jeff Palmer, Dave Smith and Brian Jackson) who are lifelong Doctor Who fans and members of the Dalek Builders’ Guild.

They formed the South West Dalek Crew to raise money for charity, using their Daleks.

Geoff’s Dalek took him three years to build and was inspired by finding a copy of the Radio Times plans from 1973. However, as Dalek builders will tell you, these are not the most accurate plans, so Geoff was able to find better plans on the Internet.

The Daleks are electric-powered and can reach speeds of up to 11mph – which enables them to cover 20-25 miles each day.
