Ah, don’t we just love those rumours? According to the Sun, Ben Kingley, best known for his roles in Gandi and Shindler’s List, is to play Davros in series four of Doctor Who.
This is, of course, unconfirmed as yet, and is likely to remain so for some time, so feel free to take this with as many pinches of salt as you like.
While Ben Kingsley would be an excellent choice to play Davros, we wonder why Terry Molloy isn’t slipping back into the role. OK, we Terry’s not an Oscar-winning household name, but there’s no faulting his portrayal of Davros, especially in the Big Finish audio adventures.
If Davros returns, it will be interesting to see ‘which Davros’ – given that the last Davros we saw was little more than an angry head. Perhaps the story will be set in a pre-Genesis of the Daleks era, before Davros’ accident (or shortly after) with the Doctor attempting to destroy the Daleks before his fourth incarnation initiates the Time War.
Rumours are also flying around as to who will take over from David Tennant as the Doctor (James Nesbitt is tipped as favourite) and who will replace Russell T Davis (Stephen Moffat is considered as the front runner).
With the current team spending three years working on the most obvious villains to bring back, it seems logical that Davros would return, but how the complex back story related to his ongoing feud with the real (or renegade) Daleks would be covered is unclear – possibly just skated over or ignored. But, let’s face it, Dalek Caan sure could do with a little help in rebuilding his race.
