Pertwee jacket from Planet of the Daleks up for sale

04 November 2008

A jacket worn by the third Doctor, Jon Pertwee, is for sale by autction at Bonhams.

The jacket was worn by Jon Pertwee for the episode ‘Planet of the Daleks’ which was broadcast in six parts from 7 April to 12 May 1973. The jacket was also seen on the cover of the 1975 Doctor Who annual.

It is described as ‘Victorian style, in plum-coloured patterned velvet, double-breasted, cuffs each with three buttons’. The Jacket’s label has been signed by Jon himself ‘Jon Pertwee 4 Jan 73’, with an inscription that reads: ‘To Dewey, with many thanks worn by Doc 3 in 1973’.

This is the only jacket of its type made for that episode – no spare or stunt jacket was made. This was confirmed by the tailor who made it, in 2007. Jon Pertwee kept the jacket after filming had finished, and held on to it until the early 1990s.

If you look closely at the real jacket and compare it to the one in the episode, they sport the same loose threads on one of the left cuff buttons – and you can also match up the pattern in the velvet and the stitching in the lining.

This is going to set you back a tad more than a jacket from the local charity shop, though: bids are expected to be in the region of £12,000 – £15,000. So you probably wouldn’t want to wear it to a convention.
