Dalek War DVD box set announced

Saturday, January 10, 2009

The simultaneous release of two Doctor Who stories from 1973, one of them a Dalek classic, has been announced.

The Dalek Warbox set will contain Planet of the Daleks, and the preceding story, Frontier in Space – the two stories being directly linked, with one carrying over to the other.

One of the things which is especially interesting about this release is that one of the episodes (the third episode of Planet of the Daleks) has previously only been available in back and white, but has been restored to colour using a groundbreaking technique that’s also added back the missing colour to an episode of Dad’s Army.

Planet of the Daleks is one of the great Dalek stories of Jon Pertwee’s era – a six-part adventure set on the planet Spiridon, where the Daleks are working hard to uncover the secret of invisibility.

There are a great deal of early Doctor Who adventures due for release this year, including:

  • The E-Space Trilogy (out shortly; fourth Doctor)
  • The Rescue and The Romans (again as a box set; first Doctor)
  • Attack of the Cybermen (sixth Doctor)
  • Delta and the Bannermen (seventh Doctor)
  • Image of the Fendahl (fourth Doctor)
  • The Deadly Assassin (one of the really great fourth Doctor stories)
  • The War Games (second Doctor epic in ten parts)

So, while we may not have the new series this year, other than the specials, we’re certainly going to be spoilt for classic stories.

(And yes, I know I’m slow in reporting this one, bear with me, just getting back to grips with life after Christmas!)
